Who uses a personal trainer?

The role of the personal trainer is changing. It used to be that celebrities and wealthy individuals were the only people that used personal trainers. The stereotype of a personal trainer used to be that of a big body builder. Today the personal trainer is a highly skilled professional that has been educated and certified to work with various types of clients. Children as young as 7 years old, 80 year old men and women, obese adults, athletes, cancer recovery patients, and adults with diseases all benefit from working with fitness consultants. Clients are using a personal trainer for: fat loss, gaining muscle mass, increasing flexibility, improving posture, alleviating stress, increasing energy, rehabilitation after an injury, improving quickness, various other health benefits, and cancer recovery.

What can a personal trainer do for me?

There are many reasons why people hire a personal trainer.  Trainers are excellent for providing motivation, teaching safe workout techniques, giving individualized instruction, suggesting new effective workouts, to bolster confidence, to provide sport-specific training, assist with injury rehabilitation, and to teach  new skills. You may want a trainer to motivate and push you to the point where you begin to see lasting results and to give you ongoing encouragement and support so you keep it up!

What happens at the initial personal training appointment?

The purpose of this first meeting is to assess what fitness information is most needed and desired, and to provide information on how to get started or continue making progress towards desirable fitness.
The visit includes review of your health history, as well as assessing your current fitness level, needs and goals.

What is a medical release and when is it necessary?

A medical release consists of a note from a healthcare provider stating any necessary exercise restrictions and/or provisions, or that states that the client has been cleared to exercise with no restrictions. Clients with a known medical condition (i.e., cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary, orthopedic, etc.) will be required to obtain medical clearance from a healthcare provider before they can workout with a trainer. Clients with symptoms suggestive of a clinical condition, or with multiple risk factors, may be required to get clearance as well.

What if I am completely out of shape?

I work with each client based on the current fitness level of the individual. The advice given is individually tailored to help the client make steady progress towards achieving a higher level of fitness and well-being. How often should I train with a personal trainer?

The number of visits with a trainer will be based on your specific needs and goals. Clients seeking an individualized exercise program may want to purchase “Jump Start” following their fitness intake, and then decide afterwards whether to purchase more sessions. Clients who want to enhance their current workout or performance may want to invest in a 12 session package. Those new to exercise or those who like ongoing personal motivation may also want to invest in ongoing training.

What should I bring to the session?

To each session you will need to bring: 1) bottled water to drink, 2) a medium-sized or large towel to place under your knees, back or head while you exercise, and 3) bicycling or weight-lifting gloves without the fingers to protect your hands while you do push-ups and other physical activities. The gloves may be purchased at any bicycle shop, gym or sporting goods store and cost about $15. 4) Most important come with a positive attitude!

Yes, absolutely. I have many athletes, tri-athletes, and marathon runners train with me. Please let me trainer know if you are cross-training for an event. I will make sure that you receive the correct level of workout. For example, instead of doing squat thrusts,I may ask you to do squat thrusts with a push-up.The main objective is to continue training progression to ensure you hit your goals as quickly as possible.

Think about what type of exercise you are doing currently. Now think about training with an experienced, certified professional where you are exercising at an intense level for 1 hour two or three times per week. You will see a difference in your body. You need to start as early as possible before your event and you may need to take more than one month of training to reach the results that you want.
